The health and wellbeing of doctors working in remote areas has been the focus of a workforce support initiative led by Doctors’ Health SA/NT, thanks to funding from NT PHN.

Over the past 18 months, the initiative has included outreach GP clinics in Nhulunbuy and Katherine, and more recently in Alice Springs. The clinics provide comprehensive, hour-long health assessments, with telehealth follow-up available.

To support retention and reduce professional isolation, the initiative also includes a broader program of engagement, such as workshops and masterclasses focussed on doctors’ health issues, rural doctors’ retreat weekends in Darwin and Alice Springs, networking opportunities and access to 24/7 peer phone support.

Led by A/Prof Jill Benson AM, Medical Director of Doctors’ Health NT, the clinics and events have been running at full capacity, supporting doctors from general practice, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and NT Government primary health teams.

A/Prof Benson travels from Adelaide to deliver the outreach clinics and said they continue to provide insight into the types of care doctors are seeking.

“People often assume this work is mainly mental health,” she says.

“In reality, 70 to 90 per cent is physical health, often more complex or sensitive issues such as fertility, sexual health, weight management, perimenopause and fatigue.”

With more than two decades of experience working in remote and Aboriginal communities, A/Prof Benson provides clinical care and education that is relevant to doctors working in the NT.

Reflecting on the masterclasses, she said they are designed to support a sustainable workforce.

“The masterclasses focus on practical skills for day-to-day work, including supervision and leadership, as well as managing moral injury, vicarious trauma and PTSD,” she says.

“Through attending a workshop, clinic or event, doctors have access to a space to pause and reflect on their own health and wellbeing and recognise any support they may need.

“Ensuring the wellbeing of our medical workforce is essential. Without good mental and physical health and ongoing development, doctors can’t give optimal care to their patients, or flourish in other parts of their lives.”
