Practice accreditation is a voluntary, independent process that recognises general practices committed to providing safe, high-quality care. It supports continuous quality improvement by helping practices review their systems, identify areas for improvement and strengthen the services they provide to patients.

NT PHN supports general practices across the NT to prepare for accreditation.

  • Our practice support team can guide practices through the accreditation process, whether they are seeking accreditation for the first time or preparing for re-accreditation.

    Support includes:

    • understanding accreditation and choosing an accreditation provider
    • policies and procedures, including guidance and templates to help develop the required documentation
    • access to resources, including the AGPAL Hub
    • planning and tracking progress, with a structured process over 12 to 18 months to help practices work towards meeting accreditation requirements.

General practices are assessed against the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Standards for general practices.

  • Accreditation can help practices strengthen their systems, improve the quality of care and support ongoing improvement.

    Benefits include:

    • improved patient care and health outcomes
    • better identification and management of practice risks
    • more effective practice systems and processes
    • recognition of quality standards by relevant insurers
    • eligibility to access the Practice Incentives Program (PIP), subject to program requirements.
  • General practices can choose from three recognised accreditation providers in Australia:

Each provider offers an accreditation process and resources to support practices in meeting the relevant standards. Fees and services vary between providers.
