Overview

Gain valuable general practice experience in the Northern Territory while working towards fellowship and reducing your Medicare provider number restrictions.

The Five-Year International Medical Graduate (IMG) Recruitment Scheme supports eligible overseas-trained doctors to work in general practice in the Northern Territory. The scheme offers a pathway to reduce the 10-year moratorium on Medicare provider number restrictions under Section 19AB of the Health Insurance Act 1973 to as little as three years, depending on the location and individual circumstances.

  • The scheme helps eligible doctors build their careers in the NT while working towards specialist qualifications in general practice or rural generalism.

Doctors who meet the scheme requirements may be eligible for an exemption from geographical restrictions on their Medicare provider number. To qualify, participants must:

    • complete the required period of service in an eligible location
    • achieve Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM)
    • obtain Australian permanent residency or citizenship.
  • To be eligible, applicants must:

    • hold or be eligible to obtain appropriate registration with the Medical Board of Australia
    • be eligible to obtain a Medicare provider number for their intended practice and location
    • intend to obtain, or already hold, Australian permanent residency or citizenship
    • work at least seven sessions per week as part of their placement
    • intend to join, or already participate in, an approved general practice or rural generalist training pathway that leads to specialist qualifications
    • commit to working at their chosen practice for the duration of their scheme agreement.
  • Review the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing’s scheme guidelines to check your eligibility and understand the scheme requirements.
