Remote Laundries Project still going strong six years on

Clean bedding, towels and clothes are crucial to being healthy, and Remote Laundries is providing that for communities all over the NT. The first trial began in Barunga six years ago and was fully established two years ago with support from NT PHN. At our recent attendance at the Barunga Festival we saw the laundry in action, still providing this crucial service to the Barunga community and going strong.

In just its first two years, data from the Sunrise Clinic showed a 60% reduction in scabies cases and no new cases of rheumatic heart disease in Barunga—a clear sign of the laundry’s health impact. Economically, the benefits are just as significant, with every dollar invested in Remote Laundries estimated to save the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing $6.

The laundry also creates meaningful, local and sustainable employment, with Barunga currently employing 10 locals. One standout example is Freddy, a proud community member who, at 55, secured his very first job through the program. The community affectionately calls it Freddy’s Laundry – a symbol of pride and progress that still operates today.

NT PHN Regional Community Engagement Lead Christine Butler says it holds a very special place in her heart. “Having been part of Remote Laundries journey since day one, it is amazing to see it continue to grow and thrive in the community.”

With improved health outcomes, employment opportunities, long-term impact and a deep connection to the community, NT PHN is proud to support the Barunga Remote Laundries program.
