Monash University Department of Forensic Medicine is proud to present its FREE CPD Training Responding to Sexual Violence in Adults at the Palmerston Hospital in Darwin.

Are you a healthcare worker working in Australia who cares for victims of sexual violence? If so, this course is for you.

  • Unit 2, ‘Responding to Sexual Violence in Adults’, is on the 21st of August 2024
  • Unit 3, ‘Responding to Sexual Violence in At-Risk Patients’ is on the 25th of August 2024

Who is this training for?

This training is open to all AHPRA registered healthcare professionals.

Unit 2 Content

This training focuses on the patient consultation, medical care, documentation and referrals.  The training will equip healthcare professionals to recognise and

respond appropriately to adult disclosures of sexual violence.

Course Facilitators

Dr Raymun Ghumman

Raymun is a general practitioner with a particular interest in the social determinants of health in primary health care settings. Raymun is currently based in Darwin, where she works across multiple settings including Indigenous health, sexual and reproductive health, and the sexual assault service as well as in medical education. She’s also held various roles in clinical forensic medicine at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM).

Dr Sophie Ping

Sophie trained as a forensic medical examiner during her GP registrar training. She has completed a PhD in neurophysiology and worked in Apia, Western Samoa and Darwin as an academic and health sciences lecturer. She is an Affiliate Associate Professor in the School of Medicine at Deakin University. Sophie currently works as a Medical Director in Victorian rural health services and is dedicated to supporting medical workforce and training in rural and remote areas, particularly with respect to sexual and family violence.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this training participants will be able to:

  1. Prioritise and integrate the complex elements of sexual violence disclosures into patient care.
  2. Construct a trauma-informed patient management plan for patients who disclose sexual violence.
  3. Identify the key ethical, medical, and forensic issues that need to be addressed in patients disclosing sexual violence.
