We are seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from a Darwin or Alice Springs-based organisation with relevant experience in advocacy, lived experience and mental health services to establish the Northern Territory Mental Health Lived Experience Collaborative Network (NT MHLECN).

Background

Establishment of national lived experience peak bodies

In July 2024, the Australian Government announced the establishment of 2 new national mental health lived experience peak bodies:

  • The National Mental Health Consumer Peak Body
  • National Mental Health Carers, Family and Kin Peak Body

Once established, the peak bodies will work closely with people with lived experience, the wider sider and the government to improve mental health outcomes for all Australians.

Collaborative network approach for the Northern Territory

The unique characteristics of the NT make it challenging to adopt existing representative body organisation models from other states and territories. Factors such as our diverse population and ensuring regional and remote voices are effectively heard require a local solution.

A collaborative network approach is the most suitable option for our particular circumstances.

This network will create an alliance of entities that:

  • maintain their individual autonomy
  • are diverse and geographically distributed
  • committed to collaborating to achieve common or compatible goals.

This network will be called the Northern Territory Mental Health Lived Experience Collaborative Network.

What is in the scope?

As an independent, NT-wide collaborative network for people with lived/living experience of mental health issues (consumers) as well as family, carer and kin representatives, the NT MHLECN will work with the community to influence systemic change through:

  • consultation and representation
  • policy advocacy and consultation
  • training and capacity building for consumers and workplaces
  • research contributions

This pilot cannot be used to fund any mental health support service (including recovery or psychosocial supports) or advocacy support/services for individuals.

Funding

NT PHN and NT Health will be co-funding the network through a 12-month pilot with total funding of $300,000.

Following an evaluation of the pilot, options for longer-term funding will be considered.

Who can apply?

This EOI is open to Darwin or Alice Springs based organisations with relevant experience in advocacy, lived experience and mental health services.
