Improving access to specialist health services

Northern Territory Primary Health Network (NT PHN) is funding a pilot program to undertake cognitive and neurological assessments to improve early detection and management of health issues across the Territory.

To significantly improve patient outcomes, follow-up care is an essential part of the program’s success. This includes access to specialists, patient education, connections to community support networks and referrals to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The program is being delivered by health professionals in Darwin, Palmerston, Groote Eylandt, Nhulunbuy, Yirrkala, Gunyangara, Raminingining, Galiwinku, Katherine, Willoura, Papunya and Kintore involving all age groups but with a particular focus on children.

Gill Yearsley, NT PHN’s CEO, said: “This program was designed in direct response to feedback from local communities and healthcare providers, highlighting the critical need for accessible cognitive and neurological assessments. By engaging with the community, we ensure that health services are tailored to meet the specific needs of Territorians.”

Gill continued to say: “Early indications from our evaluation is that the pilot program is going well with 240 assessments undertaken since the program was launched early in 2024. Almost all participants identified as Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander people. The most common diagnosis is intellectual disability, Autism, Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).”

NT PHN agrees with insights given by a health service provider, which is that although the program is open to all ages, undertaking cognitive and neurological assessments in children is particularly important so that early detection of health issues can be identified and managed. This helps children remain engaged in education, are provided employment opportunities and do not end up in the youth justice system.

NT PHN has committed funding to the program until 2026 and will continue to support monitoring and evaluation of the program.
