Headspace lights up Pine Creek with movie night for mental health

Headspace Katherine has turned a regular school holiday evening into an engaging social and emotional wellbeing event, with the organisation recently hosting a movie night for local children in Pine Creek.

The activity combined entertainment with mental health awareness, aiming to boost mental health literacy and reduce stigma in remote communities, particularly among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth.

Young kids from the community enjoyed the screening of a popular film along with buttery popcorn, immersing themselves in the movie with excitement and laughter.

Olive Fawkner, Community Engagement and Youth Participation Worker at Headspace shared her enthusiasm.

“We had an absolute blast at the Pine Creek movie night. It was so great to be able to connect with the community in such a fun environment.,” Olive said.

Recognising that stigma often prevents young people from seeking mental health support, the Headspace team designed the event to make discussions about mental wellbeing more accessible and enjoyable.

“We were very lucky to have partnered with Northern Territory PHN, Vic Daly Council and Katherine Regional Arts,” Olive added.

“All the attendees were super engaged, and we are grateful for such a great rapport-building opportunity.”

Northern Territory PHN is proud to have sponsored this activity through our community sponsorship program.
