Diabetes nurse educator is making a difference in remote NT communities

Evelyn, a diabetes nurse educator, is having a positive impact on the lives of people living with diabetes in remote areas of the Northern Territory.

After completing a post-graduate degree in diabetes education, Evelyn started travelling to remote communities with Healthy Living NT.

One of those communities is Milingimbi, a small island off the coast of Arnhem Land.

“I love working remotely because it’s an opportunity to experience new places and cultures,” Evelyn says.

People living in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities experience higher rates of type 2 diabetes and have a higher risk of developing the disease due to genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors.

Evelyn is seeking to change this by providing diabetes education to communities most at risk and assisting patients to manage their diabetes through tailored services.

“You need to adapt to the resources available in the area and tailor your services to provide the best possible diabetes management,” Evelyn says.

Northern Territory PHN is proud to provide funding for specialist clinicians like Evelyn to visit remote communities and support their health needs.
