In August, almost 450 delegates came together in Darwin for Compass 2026, our flagship biannual event for primary healthcare professionals.
Held over two days, Compass provided an opportunity for health professionals from across the Northern Territory and beyond to connect, share ideas and explore new approaches to delivering primary healthcare, with this year’s theme, ‘Changing Territory – Sustainable, Smart and Responsive Primary Care.’
The program featured more than 100 speakers across almost 80 sessions, providing delegates with a diverse range of perspectives on the changing landscape of primary healthcare in the NT.
A highlight of the program was keynote speaker Dr Dinesh Palipana OAM, who shared his personal story and perspectives on healthcare, inclusion and resilience. His keynote encouraged delegates to consider how the health system can become more inclusive and responsive to the diverse needs of the communities it serves.
Across the two days, sessions explored a wide range of topics relevant to the future of primary healthcare in the NT, including remote workforce models, digital health, community-led care and new approaches to supporting health professionals and communities.
The conference also tackled one of the biggest emerging issues in healthcare through the “Heidi will see you now” hypothetical discussion. The interactive panel explored what happens when artificial intelligence becomes part of the clinical consultation, from patients using AI tools to self-diagnose and seek health information, through to the growing use of AI scribes by health professionals. The discussion highlighted both the opportunities and challenges AI presents for healthcare, and how technology can be integrated into practice without losing the human connection at the heart of healthcare.
Beyond the formal program, Compass provided valuable opportunities for delegates to connect with colleagues, build new relationships and share experiences from across the Territory. With health professionals working across urban, regional and remote settings, the event offered a unique opportunity to bring together different perspectives and experiences from a variety of regions.
Thank you to all the speakers, delegates, sponsors and partners who helped make Compass 2026 a success. We look forward to continuing the conversation and seeing everyone again at the next Compass.
