What you will learn

What is HOTspots?

HOTspots is a disease surveillance and response program that monitors antimicrobial resistant (AMR) infections in hospital and community clinic patients. The CSIRO, Australian E-Health Research Centre, launched The HOTspots digital platform in 2019 to support local clinicians to respond to the changing patterns of AMR within their region.

Since then, HOTspots has grown into a program that provides education and training delivered in collaboration with local stakeholders. Up-to-date surveillance data informs local treatment guidelines and clinical decision making. The program is currently focused on the regional and remote areas of northern Australia where the burden of AMR is the highest but will be expanded to other geographic regions.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Define disease surveillance, emphasising its critical role in identifying and managing antimicrobial resistance, and explain its necessity in public health to safeguard against emerging resistant pathogens.
• Understand the HOTspots Disease Surveillance and Response Program, its impact on antimicrobial prescribing, and practical application guidelines.
• Apply surveillance data in clinical decision-making, focusing on case studies such as penicillin allergy management.
