REST covers many of the common emergencies that are likely to present in the pre-hospital, small rural hospital and private rural practice environment. The aim of this course is to teach a structured approach to the initial resuscitation and stabilisation of patients presenting with life-threatening conditions and to enhance the practical skills required for managing emergencies in the rural context.

Participants complete approximately 12 hours of self-directed online learning, followed by two hands-on workshop days. You’ll leave with skills in basic life support, along with more advanced skills and techniques to assist with managing life-threatening injuries and conditions.

It is recommended that participants register for the course at least 6 weeks prior to the hands-on workshop days to ensure that you have enough time to complete the online learning hours.

Learning objectives

This course will improve your ability to respond to medical emergencies in alignment with the Rural Generalist Core Curriculum Domain 4:  Respond to Medical Emergencies: hospital & prehospital, resource organisation, initial assessment and triage, emergency medical intervention and patient evacuation.

Assessment information

There are four assessment components for REST that you must successfully complete to meet the requirements of the course.

The assessment components are:

• Successful completion of 3 x Pre-course Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) Assessments, with a pass mark of 80% each.
• Successful completion of the Guided Competency Validation during the 2-day face to face workshop.

A Guided Competency Validation (GCV) of your skills is completed during the face-to-face workshop and provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate Emergency Medicine skills with the support and assistance of your colleagues, as you would in the clinical environment. You will get multiple opportunities to practice and demonstrate these skills in a supportive and friendly environment.  So you know what to expect, you can view the assessment criteria for the GCV in the online course.

You will also be required to complete a survey to provide feedback about the course.

Additional information

Fees must be paid at the time of registration in order to secure a place. A grant may be available to fund your attendance at this course.

PLEASE NOTE:

• It is mandatory that participants be present for the entire duration of the REST course over both days (8.00 am to 5.30 pm local time.
• It is highly recommended that participants consider the start and finish times when making travel arrangements.
• Participants will be required to successfully complete the online modules and assessments (approximately 12 hours) prior to attending the face-to-face days.

If for any unexpected reason, a participant arrives after the course has commenced, their place in the course will be forfeited. The participant will be required to re-book, and this may also incur additional charges.
