Increase your knowledge and skills to support children with Paediatric Feeding Disorder.

This introductory level session will explore what we know about children with a restricted diet, including how we might discriminate between children who are developmentally typical picky eaters and children with more persuasive feeding challenges. Information regarding how we apply that knowledge to assessment and treatment of this area as speech language pathologists in a multidisciplinary team will be discussed.

Focus will be given to the assessment process, including advice about the use of both formal and informal measures to guide treatment goals. Information from the literature and existing practice will be presented to guide decision making regarding treatment. A case will be integrated into the presentation with opportunities for participants to practice the immediate application of new theory into real life situations.

• Describe the diagnosis and four domains of dysfunction in Paediatric Feeding Disorder.
• Understand the role of the speech pathologist in the multidisciplinary team providing care for the child with a restricted diet.
• Discuss the components that may form part of an assessment process for children with a restricted diet.
• Plan appropriate functional treatment goals for children with a restricted diet.
• Compare and contrast different treatment options for children with a restricted diet.
• Implement the knowledge into a case study of a child with a restricted diet.
• Recognise the milestones for typical feeding skills development in children.

Presenter

Dr Jeanne Marshall
Dr Jeanne Marshall is a speech pathologist with many years of experience in paediatric feeding and swallowing. She is currently employed in a conjoint research fellow role between Children’s Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service, and the University of Queensland.

Her primary research interest is paediatric feeding disorder, with a particular focus on preventative health in this area. Jeanne has various projects aligned with this concept, across the themes of better diagnostics, early intervention and awareness and advocacy.

Jeanne also has a passion for research translation and building research capacity in the health workforce, working alongside clinicians at Children’s Health Queensland to improve care at the front line.
