Free, NT PHN & NTAHC Engaging with LGBTIQA+SB Community 1-day Workshops for Health Professionals – NT Wide

The NT PHN and NTAHC are hosting free workshops on how to provide inclusive, trauma-informed care, for LGBTIQA+SB clients across the Northern Territory.

There will be two workshops in each location, so choose the date that works for you:

  • Darwin- 4 or 6 March, 9:30am – 4:00pm

  • Tennant Creek – 18 or 20 March, 9:30am – 4:00pm
  • Alice Springs – 25or 27 March, 9:30am – 4:00pm
  • Nhulunbuy – 8 or 10 April, 9:30am – 4:00pm

Participants will learn about gender, sexuality and identity, historical factors affecting LGBTQIA+SB healthcare experiences and strategies to improve health outcomes and cultural safety. We are inviting all primary health professionals, including GPs, interested in fostering safer, more inclusive support systems for LGBTQIA+SB clients to attend this workshop.

Led by Forest Peters, a non-binary, queer social worker, the workshop will provide insights into inclusive, trauma-informed care for transgender and LGBTQIA+SB communities. Forest will be joined by experienced NTAHC presenters with lived-experience.

Please note: you will be required to complete a 1-hour, online session, prior to the workshop.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Define key concepts related to gender, sexuality, and identity.
  2. Describe historical factors that have influenced how LGBTQIA+SB people interact with healthcare services and the broader community.
  3. Analyse the impact of historical and systemic factors on the health and well-being of LGBTQIA+SB communities.
  4. Identify opportunities within their role to improve health outcomes and strengthen connections with LGBTQIA+ communities.
  5. Apply inclusive practices to foster affirming and respectful healthcare interactions, with a commitment to continuous learning and cultural safety.
