The latest updates in colorectal and anal cancer

The NT PHN invites Primary Health Professionals to join us for this free CPD education evening at the Oaks Elan Hotel Darwin. A buffet dinner will follow the presentation.

Our presenter, Dr Michelle Thomas, will discuss the latest updates in colorectal and anal cancer, the role of screening and how to manage these diseases.

The global incidence of bowel cancer in younger people has been rising since the 1980s, with a 266% increase in incidence rates among adolescents and young adults over the past three decades. • Dr Michelle Thomas
  • Dr Michelle Thomas is a consultant colorectal surgeon with nearly 30 years experience currently working in both private practice (Adelaide Private Surgeons) as well as at the Royal Adelaide Hospital where she has also served as Head of Unit. She did some of her early training in Darwin and for the last few years has returned to provide specialist services for a week three times a year.  While treating all colorectal conditions, Dr Thomas has a special interest in pelvic floor disorders and minimally invasive surgery (robotic and laparoscopic). She has a PhD on the molecular biology of colorectal cancer and has an ongoing strong commitment to research as part of the RAH Colorectal Research Group and is a Senior Lecturer at Adelaide University.

Colorectal Cancer

1. Recognise the increasing incidence of colorectal cancer in younger populations

3. Summarise the role of targeted therapies in colorectal cancer management
4. Describe emerging approaches in the management of rectal cancer
5. Identify common functional issues following rectal cancer treatment and appropriate management options

Anal Cancer

1. Recognise key symptoms and clinical signs of anal cancer
2. Describe referral pathways and when referral is indicated
3. Outline expected outcomes and follow-up considerations after treatment
4. Explain the role of screening in anal cancer
