According to KHA, kidney disease affects one in seven Australians. If you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, this number increases to one in five people.  In remote and very remote areas of Australia, the incidence of kidney failure among First Nations Australians is especially high, with rates up to 20 times higher than those of comparable non-Indigenous peoples.(https://kidney.org.au/your-kidneys/first-nations-australians/)

An estimated 2.5 million Australians are unaware that they have signs of kidney disease. Today, one million more Australians live with CKD than a decade ago. (https://kidney.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Kidney-Code-Red-The-Response-Exec-Summary.pdf)

Additionally, around a third of Australian adults are affected by one or more of CKD, diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Adults with diabetes have the highest rate of comorbidity, with 68% having comorbid CKD and/or cardiovascular disease. This activity explores the evidence in making the link between chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, and the impact of these three conditions on an individual’s wellbeing.

Medication and treatment strategies to manage chronic kidney disease alongside diabetes and cardiovascular disease will also be addressed.

Who should attend?

This education session is for GPs and primary health professionals treating people living with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Learning Objectives

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:​

1. Identify which individuals in the population are at increased risk of chronic kidney disease.
2. Describe the importance of Urine ACR testing in the detection and management of chronic kidney disease.
3. Define treatment therapies that can delay the progression of kidney disease.
