Free ‘Managing Syphilis’, Training in Alice Springs for the Aboriginal Health Workforce from 14-15 April 2026

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce are vital partners in the journey toward syphilis elimination.

Join Menzies School of Health Research, the NT Department of Health to expand your knowledge of syphilis management and learn alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders and peers from across the Northern Territory.

Who should attend?

This course is designed for Aboriginal Health Practitioners, Aboriginal Community Workers, and any Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander members of the health workforce who want to deepen their understanding of syphilis and strengthen their practical skills in prevention, testing and management.

Facilitators

This course has been developed by Menzies School of Health Research in partnership with NT Health, CDU, NTAHC and ASHM. It has been co-designed and is delivered by experienced Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal facilitators with expertise in sexual health, syphilis management, community engagement and NT clinical contexts.

Workshop Outline

  • Day One: Introduction to understanding syphilis, health promotion and community-focused approaches.
  • Day Two: Interpreting syphilis serology and building practical skills, including point-of-care testing.

These sessions aim to strengthen culturally safe, evidence‑based approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of syphilis, with a strong focus on the Northern Territory context. Catering is provided on both days.

Learning outcomes

Participants will leave with:

  • Increased confidence in recognising and managing syphilis.
  • Skills to interpret syphilis serology in clinical and community settings.
  • Practical knowledge of health promotion approaches tailored to Aboriginal communities.
  • Hands-on experience conducting point-of-care testing.
  • Tools to support culturally safe communication, education and client follow-up.
