‘HIV and STI Prevention and Screening’

The NT PHN invites GPs and other primary health professionals to hear from the Kirby Institute’s visiting Senior Fellow, Associate Professor Catherine O’Connor during her tenure in Alice Springs as the locum Senior Staff Specialist at Clinic 34.

GP Liaison, Dr Kelly Banz, will also provide a GP Update prior to Assoc. Prof. O’Connor’s presentation.

• Associate Professor Catherine O’Connor
  • Assoc. Prof. Catherine O’Connor is the UNDP, HIV/STI Medical Specialist for 12 Pacific Island Countries. She was the director of Sexual Health in the Sydney Local Health District from 1996-2019.
  • Catherine is currently a Visiting Senior Fellow with the UNSW’s Kirby Institute and a locum Senior Staff Specialist at Clinic 34 in Alice Springs.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:​

1. Identify appropriate HIV and STI screening practices, including antenatal testing and screening in rural and remote communities.
2. Describe key prevention strategies for HIV and other communicable infections, including hepatitis B and mpox vaccination and HIV PrEP.
3. Recognise appropriate clinical responses to syphilis and mpox in priority populations.

Using HealthPathways for CPD
