Program Outline

TMS is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique to treat depression and other psychiatric disorders.

The TMS course is designed for clinicians and researchers and facilitated by leading experts in neurostimulation and mood disorders, Professor Colleen Loo and the Sydney Neurostimulation Team.

Our reformatted TMS Course consists of three modules. To complete the RANZCP endorsed course, psychiatrists must complete a combination of Module 1 and a practical module (i.e., Module 2 or 3).

Module 1 TMS Theory

2 days, 15 hours, Online (live sessions)

*Nurses have the option of attending day 1 only.

This course is suitable for clinicians and researchers who want to better understand TMS, covering the following topics:

• TMS for the treatment of mood disorders

• TMS side effects and safety considerations

• Use of TMS in other psychiatric disorders

• Clinical case presentations

• TMS and other brain stimulation techniques

• TMS and cognition

• Demonstrations of RMT and Treatment procedures

Module 2 TMS Practical Introductory Workshop

1 day, 6 hours, Face-to-Face

Introductory, hands-on practical workshops (6 hours total) delivered face-to-face covering:

• RMT procedure

• Treatment procedure for depression

The workshops are comprised of small groups (4-5 attendees per group) and run by a course demonstrator with each trainee attending both RMT and treatment workshops.

Module 3 TMS Intensive Training & Credentialing

This module involves intensive practical training and formal credentialing of an individual practitioner’s methodology and technique on RMT and/or treatment procedures according to a prescribed standard. Credentialing involves formal appraisal of all aspects of technique, resulting in a credentialing certificate for RMT and/or treatment procedures. The training and credentialing consist of the following:

• Overview of basic theory, principles, and safety considerations of TMS

• Demonstration of RMT and/ or treatment procedures

• Intensive hands-on training and practice of RMT and/or treatment procedures using TMS machine and coil

• Formal oral assessment of knowledge of TMS theory, principles and safety

• Formal practical assessment of RMT and/ or treatment methodology and technique

CPD

This course has been endorsed by the RANZCP as CPD activity code: ED000058, and each hour of participation can be claimed under Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 4.1)

To complete the RANZCP endorsed course, Psychiatrists must complete a combination of Module 1 and a practical module (i.e., Module 2 or3). Participants are welcome to complete all three modules but have the option of completing selective modules depending on their needs and past training or clinical\experience.
