Dr Yen-Chang Chen

• Dr Yen-Chang Chen is a specialist respiratory physician based at Alice Springs Hospital, with a comprehensive background spanning chest medicine, intensive care medicine, and general medicine from their training in Taiwan. They also hold a Master of Bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania, with a strong interest in healthcare justice and resource allocation in underserved communities. 
• Dr Chen has a keen clinical focus on severe asthma and the comprehensive care of lung cancer. Dedicated to addressing the unique healthcare challenges of regional and remote populations, their presentation aims to provide general practitioners with practical, evidence-based approaches to optimizing asthma management and referral.

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:​

1. Outline the clinical epidemiology & acute care burden of uncontrolled asthma in Australia.
2. Implement personalised treatment tracks, transitioning patients from SABA-only to AIR/MART therapy.
3. Assess acute exacerbation severity & execute immediate emergency management protocols.
4. Select inhaler devices based on patient-centric factors & environmental impact.
5. Apply GINA & Australian Asthma Handbook critieria to confirm variable expiratory airflow limitation via spirometry.
6. Differentiate clinical & inflammatory phenotypes to execute step-wise management strategies.
7. Integrate objective PFT & Type 2 biomarkers into longitudinal care & referral workflows.
