ACRRM’s Point of Care Ultrasound for Rural Generalists (POCUS-RG) course equips Rural Generalists and GPs with the foundational skills and confidence to perform a wide range of ultrasound-guided assessments in everyday rural and remote clinical settings. Developed by Rural Generalists for Rural Generalists, the course is grounded in the core generalist aspects of the ACRRM Rural Generalist Curriculum and focuses on the practical use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) at the bedside.
This blended learning program includes one day of interactive, self-directed online learning, followed by a one-day, face-to-face workshop led by experienced Rural Generalist facilitators. Participants will gain hands-on experience using handheld devices such as the Butterfly iQ and GE Vscan, learning to perform and interpret ultrasound scans that support faster clinical decision-making in resource-limited environments.
Covering essential POCUS applications including eFAST, AAA screening, cardiac and lung assessment, renal and abdominal scanning, obstetric evaluation, critical care, musculoskeletal conditions, and ultrasound-guided procedures, this course prepares you to confidently incorporate ultrasound into your daily clinical practice.
Who Should Complete This Course?
ACRRM members including Rural Generalists, General Practitioners, registrars, and other clinicians working in rural and remote settings.
Please note: It is recommended that participants register for the course at least 6 weeks prior to the hands-on workshop day. Online modules will be released 4 weeks prior to the course.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Recall the knowledge required to conduct ultrasound examinations for common clinical presentations encountered in rural practice, including but not limited to:
- Obstetic ultrasound (first-trimester bleeding, dating, viability)
- Abdominal ultrasound (cholecystitis, kidney stones, abdominal aortic aneurysm)
- Musculoskeletal ultrasound (joint effusions, soft tissue injuries)
- Cardiac ultrasound (heart failure, pericardial effusion)
- Renal and genitourinary
- Interpret and integrate POCUS findings into clinical decision-making for accurate diagnosis, triage, and appropriate management of patients in resource-limited settings
- Recognise when to seek further consultation or refer patients to specialised care knowing the limitations of POCUS
Assessment information
There are two assessment components for POCUS-RG that you must successfully complete to meet the requirements of the course.
The assessment components are:
- Successful completion of the pre-course Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) Assessments, with a pass mark of 80%.
- Participants will be assessed during the face-to-face component of the course.
Additional information
It is mandatory that participants complete the self-directed online learning program (inclusive of MCQs) prior to attending the workshop.
Participants must be present for the entire duration of the course (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time). Therefore, it is highly recommended that interstate travellers arrive at the course location at least one day before the commencement of the course.
If, for any reason, a participant arrives after the course has commenced or departs before the end of the course, they will be ineligible to receive a Certificate of Attendance or the allocated CPD hours. The participant will be required to re-book which will incur additional charges.
