General Practice in Aged Care Incentive

The General Practice in Aged Care Incentive (GPACI) aims to enhance healthcare services for elderly residents in aged care facilities. This initiative seeks to support more regular, planned care within aged care homes, benefiting both providers and residents.

Overview

  • Enhanced care services: Providers participating in this initiative may benefit from rural loadings and rebates for longer and more complex Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items. Eligible practices can also access the triple bulk billing incentive, introduced in November 2023, for each bulk-billed visit to aged care residents.
  • Benefits for older adults: Older people living in aged care will receive improved care through regular visits, comprehensive care planning, and health assessment services. This approach aims to enhance continuity of care and reduce hospitalizations among aged care residents.
  • Financial support: Eligible providers will receive payments for services provided to older people residing in aged care. Practices will also receive funding aimed at ensuring quality care management within aged care settings.

Registration and implementation details

Providers and practices can begin registering for GPACI from 1 July 2024.

Timeline

Transition from PIP GP ACAI

The Practice Incentives Program General Practitioner Aged Care Access Incentive (PIP GP ACAI) will cease on 31 July 2024. The final payment for PIP GP ACAI will be made in August 2024 for the reference period from 1 May to 31 July 2024.

GPs eligible for the final PIP GP ACAI payment are encouraged to update their bank details promptly to facilitate timely payment. Following the cessation of PIP GP ACAI, GPs will have three payment quarters to finalize outstanding payments they are expecting to receive; any outstanding amounts after this period will be forfeited.

Overlap period eligibility

Practices and providers may be eligible to receive payments under both PIP GP ACAI and the MyMedicare General Practice in Aged Care Incentive for services delivered during the overlap period, provided they meet specific eligibility and servicing requirements.
